The Service Sector

It’s the constant piercing stabs to your attention all day. You can’t focus on anything in particular. “Where’s the bathroom?”, little stab. Your coworker starts talking to himself, another tiny piercing. A customer comes in hot and spicy. Rude. Condescending. Another coworker comes to show another coworker a picture on her phone. People start raising their voices. A crescendo of voices all around you get louder and louder while you’re trying to ask the customer for his last name. It gets quiet. For only a few seconds. Then, it starts all over again.

You experience this for 8 hours every day for 5 days a week. Your attention has been beaten down to a pulp and stabbed for so long that it’s almost impossible to heal back from. It’s almost impossible to refocus on the things that actually matter to you.

But you have to try.
